JERA, Japan’s energy major, and PTT Public Company Limited, a state enterprise operating petroleum and related businesses under the Energy Ministry of Thailand, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on initiatives for expanding the supply chain and usage of hydrogen and ammonia towards decarbonisation in Thailand.
According to JERA, the MoU stipulates that JERA and PTT will jointly consider the following hydrogen and ammonia-related activities:
In its National Energy Plan, Thailand has declared that it will be carbon neutral by 2050 and achieve net zero by 2065, and collaboration with Japan is expected to help Thailand reach these targets. To note, the countries are expected to strengthen cooperation on decarbonisation technologies, including hydrogen and ammonia.
PTT individually has also set a target of Net Zero Emissions by 2050 in accordance with the National Energy Plan, achieving carbon neutral 2050 and net zero by 2065, and collaborating with Japanese companies is expected to help PTT achieve it.
On the other side, JERA said it is striving to build and expand the global supply chain for clean fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia. It noted: “Working together with PTT we believe we can expand this hydrogen and ammonia vision to also support Thailand’s decarbonisation.”
