BayWa r.e. inaugurates largest floating solar plant in Central Europe

German renewable energy company BayWa r.e. has officially inaugurated the Grafenwörth floating solar plant, the largest of its kind in Austria and Central Europe.

The company revealed this milestone in a brief social media update on 17 May.

The project was built earlier this year by BayWa r.e.’s Austrian subsidiary ECOWind and co-developed with the utility of Lower Austria EVN.

The floating solar system in Lower Austria’s Grafenwörth hosts more than 45,000 PV panels, measures approximately 14 hectares, and is built on the water surface in a former sand and gravel pit on two lakes.

It will produce 26,700MWh of green electricity per year and will be able to supply around 7,500 Austrian households, according to developers.

The project is the fourth largest floating solar plant in Europe after three projects located in the Netherlands, which have all been built by BayWa r.e.

The company has installed a total of 15 floating solar projects with more than 230MW worldwide.
