Jiangnan Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, has held a naming ceremony for two very large gas carriers (VLGCs) built for compatriot LPG carrier owner Tianjin Southwest Maritime (TSM).
As informed, the shipbuilder held the ceremony for two 93,000 cbm VLGCs on 24 May. The vessels were named Gas Jupiter and Gas Neptune.
The ships are the fourth generation of VLGCs independently designed and developed by the Chinese shipbuilding firm. They have a total length of 230 meters, a molded width of 36.6 meters, and a service speed of 16.5 knots.
The ships are equipped with the latest energy-efficiency technologies to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. With these features incorporated into the design, the company expects that the units will meet the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) latest NOx and SOx emission requirements, as well as EEDI III Tier requirements.
The ships will also be equipped with TMC Compressors’ (TMC) energy-efficient smart air compressors, which offer up to 50 percent energy saving compared to conventional compressors.
According to the company, Gas Jupiter has already been delivered, while Gas Neptune is scheduled to go on sea trials in the next period. The vessel is slated for delivery in August this year.
Jiangnan Shipbuilding has recently signed a contract with Singaporean shipping company Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) for the construction of four very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) with a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters. The announcement came on the back of the company’s recent delivery of the world’s largest VLGC to Singapore-based shipping and trading company Petredec.
