JERA and ADNOC join hands on hydrogen and ammonia

Japan’s energy major JERA has concluded a strategic collaboration agreement (SCA) with UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), related to cooperation in clean hydrogen and ammonia.

According to JERA, the two parties have built a good relationship through years of LNG sale and purchase, and have jointly conducted feasibility assessments in the hydrogen and ammonia fields, which led to discussions about ways to deepen their cooperation and the conclusion of the SCA.

JERA noted the SCA, signed on 17 July 2023, is a continuation of the good collaboration and relationship established between the two majors and will reinforce the collaboration toward a value chain in clean hydrogen and ammonia fields, contributing to the expansion of business opportunities for both companies.

In order to achieve its JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050 objective, JERA informed it will continue to work with leading companies in Japan and overseas to establish and expand supply chains for hydrogen and ammonia, thereby contributing to global decarbonization and energy solutions.

On the other side, the UAE, with its Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, aims to become one of the leading producers of clean hydrogen by 2031, and ADNOC is expected to play an important role in achieving that target.

To note, the JERA-ADNOC deal comes at a time of enhanced cooperation between Japan and the UAE. The two countries just affirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation on climate action, decarbonization efforts and clean energy.

During a Japan-UAE business forum in Abu Dhabi, Japan’s Prime Minister (PM) Fumio Kishida stated: “I hope that Japan and the UAE will further strengthen their cooperation and develop strategic partnerships in order to promote a realistic energy transition and accelerate innovation toward the realization of a decarbonized society.”
