Swiss cleantech company Cavotec revealed that it has signed a $5.7 million shore power retrofit deal contract with an undisclosed European shipping line.
The agreement entails the complete retrofit of container vessels from the installation of Cavotec’s cable management system to modifications of the ship’s switchboards. The work will be completed in 2024 during drydock for some of the vessels and during commercial sailing for the remainder.
Shore power technology enables vessels to connect to clean electrical energy in ports and shut off their main generators, thereby reducing noise and emissions in nearby communities.

Companies are switching to shore power as a way of preparing for existing and upcoming regulations governing shore power usage.
Namely, from January 1, 2030, container and passenger ships greater than or equal to 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) will have to plug into shore power in main EU ports in the trans-European transport network under the FuelEU Maritime regulation.
