French shipping major CMA CGM has entered into an agreement with American athletic footwear and apparel corporation Nike to purchase sustainable biofuel for a part of their maritime transport.
From July 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, Nike will use sustainable biofuel for the transportation of 36% of their volume with CMA CGM. Through this action, Nike expects to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25,000 tons. The company sees this as an important leap towards greener operations.
“Collaborating with a key player like Nike and taking this major step towards decarbonisation is an important achievement. We are confident that our success will act as a catalyst, encouraging other carriers and customers to join us on this path to accelerate the transition towards a net zero industry,” stated Olivier Nivoix , Executive Vice President at CMA CGM.
This initiative aligns with the CMA CGM Group’s comprehensive strategy for decarbonization, working towards achieving Net Zero by 2050 and supporting its clients in decarbonizing their supply chain.
CMA CGM recently joined forces with Abu Dhabi-based clean energy company Masdar to explore opportunities for long-term green maritime fuels offtake contracts.
As part of its commitment to reach net zero by 2050 , CMA CGM has set ambitions for a 30% total emission reduction by 2030, compared to 2008, and an 80% emission reduction by 2040. To reach that ambition, the French company accelerates its energy transition, notably by integrating low-carbon fuels into its energy mix.
The cooperation with Masdar is expected to facilitate the deployment of CMA CGM’s new generation of dual-fuel ships ready to use biofuels and e-fuels based on methane and methanol, of which 35 are currently in fleet and 84 in order.
