German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has entered into a transformative contract agreement with Iceland-based software company Ankeri Solutions aimed at accelerating Hapag’s fleet decarbonization efforts.
As explained, the strategic partnership aims to support Hapag-Lloyd’s ‘ambitious’ decarbonization strategy by leveraging this long-standing partnership and Ankeri’s tool set.
In response to the urgent need for sustainable shipping practices, Hapag-Lloyd has taken a significant step forward by selecting Ankeri to provide a comprehensive suite of tools designed to streamline and expedite the decarbonization process for its fleet. This selected suite builds on existing digital infrastructure provided by Ankeri and combines the strengths of several business units to support the fleet transition efforts.
The collaboration between the duo is said to underscore a commitment to fostering innovation in the maritime industry. Ankeri’s technology has been in use since 2018 and enables Hapag-Lloyd to assess, optimize, and monitor various aspects of its fleet’s energy efficiency, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

The collaboration aims to deliver tangible results in reducing emissions and fostering a more sustainable approach to global shipping operations.
With a fleet of 264 containerships and a total transport capacity of 2.0 million TEU, Hapag-Lloyd is the world’s fifth-biggest container shipping company, according to the Alphaliner Top 100 list.
Earlier this year, Hapag-Lloyd signed an agreement with Danish counterpart Maersk for a new long-term operational collaboration called ”Gemini Cooperation”, which will start in February 2025.
The new cooperation will comprise a fleet pool of around 290 vessels with a combined capacity of 3.4 million containers (TEU); Maersk will deploy 60% and Hapag-Lloyd 40%. Many of these ships will be ready to adopt cleaner fuels.
