The Maritime Technologies Forum (MTF), founded by seven flag states and classification societies to bridge the gap between technical knowledge and regulatory process, has updated its assessment framework to include emerging alternative marine fuels and evaluate their maturity and readiness.
On March 12, 2024, MTF released an updated Framework for Assessing Decarbonization Technologies and Alternative Energy Carriers and a comprehensive assessment of the maturity and readiness of alternative fuel options, expanding the number of evaluated fuels covered since the previous heatmap report issued in November 2022 .
The assessment applied MTF’s recently updated framework to an expanded set of eight fuels, including fossil LNG, fossil MGO combined with carbon capture and storage (CCS), liquefied bio-methane, bio-methanol, green synthetic methanol, green ammonia, and liquefied blue hydrogen, comparing each to the current baseline fuel, fossil MGO.
The MTF framework, led by classification society DNV, covers eight evaluation categories: greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity, technology readiness and acceptance, sustainability and environmental aspects, safety, economic viability, regulatory maturity, skills availability, and engineering.
When compared to the baseline fuel, fossil MGO, all alternative fuels show lower GHG emission intensities, although values for biofuels and hydrogen-based synthetic fuels depend on details in production pathways. When looking at the number of barriers to adoption, biofuels and green synthetic methanol were found to have fewer than green ammonia or liquefied (blue) hydrogen, MTF’s assessment found.
In addition to assessing the feasibility of each fuel based on the relevant criteria, the evaluation also considers the level of confidence in the assessment. Results of the assessment are presented in the form of heatmaps, aiding the identification of hot spots that require more attention or prioritization to help the industry meet net-zero emission goals.
Five main observations emerged from the work on heatmaps, including high-priority suggestions for the industry:
