China’s oil and gas giant CNOOC Limited has brought on stream a gas project in the Bohai Sea off the coast of China.

Located in the central Bohai Sea, with an average water depth of approximately 23 meters, the Bozhong 19-6 gas field 13-2 Block 5 well site development project has started production, according to the Chinese energy heavyweight.

CNOOC, which holds 100% interest in this project and acts as the operator, expects to achieve a peak production of approximately 5,800 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2026. The main production facilities entail a wellhead platform, with ten development wells planned to be commissioned.

The company has intensified its search for more hydrocarbons in Chinese waters. In March 2024, the firm made a significant oil discovery in the northcentral waters of the Bohai Sea, which followed the one the firm disclosed in the eastern South China Sea.

These efforts correspond with CNOOC’s business strategy and development plan for 2024, which outlines plans to step up oil and gas production, strengthen hydrocarbon reserves, and scale up natural gas exploration activities. The Chinese player also intends to boost its energy transition journey to low-carbon and renewable energy.
