UK-based technology company Artemis Technologies and compatriot ferry company Red Funnel have signed a partnership agreement to introduce Artemis electric high-speed ferry to Red Funnel’s Southampton to West Cowes route.
As informed, the Artemis EF-24 passenger ferry represents the next step in the decarbonization journey and Red Funnel is joining two other ferry operators adopting the technology to decarbonize their operations.
This addition to Red Funnel’s fleet is expected to provide the first zero-emissions commercial service between the South Coast and the Isle of Wight, according to the partners.
Specifically, the vessel is expected to save up to 3,700 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
Using electricity from renewable sources will increase annual emissions savings to approximately 4,150 tons of CO2 emissions, Artemis Technologies noted.
In addition to reducing air pollution and noise, the fully accessible passenger ferry will use hydrofoil propulsion technology to fly over waves, lifting the vessel out of the water to reduce drag and provide a smoother experience for passengers.

The ferry will be ready for passenger service in late 2025, when it will join the Red Funnel Fleet.
