Longship launches, names third diesel-electric vessel

Dutch shipping company Longship has held a launching and christening ceremony for the third out of four ultra-low-emission, diesel-electric general cargo ships at Türkiye’s Atlas Shipyard.

As informed, the ceremony for the 8,600 dwt eco-friendly newbuild took place on June 27, 2024. The vessel was named Longearth.

The ship is expected to be ready for delivery at the beginning of 2025.

The event follows the delivery of the first vessel in this series, Longera, which was handed over on June 25, 2024.

The ships have a diesel-electric propulsion system that delivers a reduction in consumption of about 45 percent when compared to the currently dominant ship types of similar size, according to Longship.

The vessel design is compliant with the EU Stage V standards applicable to non-road mobile machinery (NRMM), the shipowner highlighted.

Moreover, the vessels hold the class notation Prepared for Methanol C as a hybrid alternative.

In January last year, the Dutch shipping company placed an order for four ultra-low-emission ships from Atlas Shipyard.
