Swedish-Israeli wave energy developer Eco Wave Power has launched its first MW-scale wave energy project in Porto, Portugal.
The company’s CEO and engineering team held a site visit with APDL (Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S.A) and other stakeholders for the kickoff of the company’s first MW-scale wave energy project.
Following the meeting with APDL, Eco Wave Power’s engineering team visited the breakwater and the room beneath it, known as “The Gallery,” where the company’s energy conversion equipment will be installed. This site will later become a wave energy museum and education center that is open to the public, said Eco Wave Power.
During the visit, the team met with local subcontractors and manufacturers to select partners for the project.
“We believe that this will be the first wave energy project in the world to show significant energy production from the power of the waves. I truly believe that this revolutionary project will position Eco Wave Power as a leading wave energy developer and serve as a significant milestone towards the commercialization of our wave energy technology globally,” said Inna Braverman , Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Eco Wave Power.

The first MW-scale project aligns with a 20 MW concession agreement with APDL, with plans for gradual expansion to full capacity. Eco Wave Power will be responsible for securing all the licenses, constructing, and commissioning.
In March 2024, Eco Wave Power received the final approval to start construction in Porto and issued a performance bond to APDL, committing to complete the commercial wave energy project within two years.
This project supports Portugal’s renewable energy plan, aiming to generate 85% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, up from 61% in 2023.
To remind, Eco Wave Power established a wholly owned subsidiary EW Portugal -Wave Energy Solutions in Portugal in September 2020 to commence official licensing procedures for its 20 MW wave energy project.
