France’s technological containment specialist Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT) has received approval in principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a classification society, for ammonia (NH3)-ready notation of its Mark III containment system on vessels fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The approval allows future conversion of LNG tanks equipped with GTT’s Mark III technology for NH3 use aboard LNG-powered vessels, making them more versatile and long-lasting as they will be given a new lease on life following conversion. The containment specialist describes its Mark III technology as a cryogenic liner used to contain LNG at low temperatures during shipping, onshore, and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure.

While the use of ammonia as fuel is still to be proven, this approval brings us a step closer to enabling multi-gas conversion on vessels fitted with GTT technologies, reinforcing our position at the forefront of sustainable maritime solutions.”
As stated by the French firm, the AiP underscores its commitment to developing sustainable and flexible solutions for the maritime industry, ensuring that shipowners and operators can adapt to evolving environmental regulations and maritime standards.

In addition to this approval, the French firm recently received several orders from clients around the world. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering hired GTT to design the cryogenic fuel tanks for 12 new LNG-fueled container vessels it is constructing for CMA CGM, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) commissioned it for tanks of two new LNG carriers being built for an undisclosed European shipowner .
Furthermore, China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC) placed an order with GTT for the tank design of two new 175,000 m3 LNG vessels on behalf of Ocean Jade Investment. The tanks, whose delivery is expected between Q1 and Q2 2028, will be fitted with the French player’s Mark III Flex membrane containment system.
