Renewable energy business WaveX has received a statement of feasibility from OWC Australia & New Zealand, a part of energy and marine consultancy ABL Group, for its wave-powered generator technology.

After a technical review, WaveX said that OWC issued a Statement of Feasibility for the D-Spar wave power generator, in accordance with IEC TS 62600-4:2020, Marine energy – Wave, tidal and other water current converters – Part 4: Specification for establishing the qualification of new technology.

The ongoing engagement with OWC will support further development and qualification of the technology, validating its technical, commercial, and environmental credentials, said the Australian company.

“I am excited that we have reached this milestone with our renewable energy technology and look forward to proving it’s validity with large scale field deployments in 2025. The Statement of Feasibility provides further validation on top of the testing and simulation work already completed and confirms our pathway forwards towards commercialisation,” said Simon Renwick , Founder & Director of WaveX.

According to WaveX, the company developed a wave energy system based on proven oil and gas industry structures. The design uses traditional materials suitable for a circular economy and avoids underwater moving parts, operating similarly to offshore wind energy systems.

The self-installing system eliminates the need for large floating cranes and ensures safe access for operations and maintenance, states WaveX. Tank testing at the University of Western Australia validated the system and numerical models, with plans for large-scale deployment by 2025.
