Wood scores pre-FEED deal for Shell’s low-carbon hydrogen project in Oman

UK-headquartered energy major Shell has selected compatriot engineering and consulting company Wood to deliver preliminary front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) for its low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia project in Oman.

The project called Blue Horizons will produce low-carbon blue hydrogen and ammonia for local and international markets and capture and store CO2 prom production. It is expected to be the first large-scale project of its kind in Oman.

Under the agreement, Wood will design the integrated blue hydrogen and ammonia production facility, marine facilities including ammonia storage, a 200-kilometer pipeline, and a CO2 injection facility.

The work is to be completed in 2025.

Giuseppe Zuccaro , President of Process & Chemicals at Wood, commented: “The innovative Blue Horizons project will serve as a catalyst to Oman’s adoption of zero-carbon fuels. We are delighted to work with Shell to deliver this pre-FEED package, combining our in-country capability and global subject matter expertise to drive progress on this exciting initiative.“

Earlier this year, Shell selected U.S. science, technology and engineering company KBR to provide its proprietary ammonia synthesis loop technology for the Blue Horizons project.

To remind, Shell signed multiple partnership agreements with Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Oman LNG, and OQ, former Oman Oil Company, in the fields of LNG and hydrogen at the beginning of 2023.
