Pre-lay operations about to begin for first UK-Germany energy link

The C-Horizon vessel is set to soon kick off shallow water debris removal, boulder relocation and pre-lay grapnel run activity in UK waters to clear the proposed cable route for the first direct energy link between the UK and Germany.

The 1.4 GW NeuConnect interconnector will see the construction of new converter stations on the Isle of Grain, the UK, and the Wilhelmshaven region in Lower Saxony, northern Germany, connected by a subsea cable approximately 700 kilometers long passing through British, Dutch and German waters.

The estimated start date of the first pre-lay operations campaign is August 30, with activities expected to be completed by September 24.

Construction work at the UK site on the Isle of Grain began last year , with the start of foundation works on the UK converter station starting this May . As construction also recently began in Germany , NeuConnect remains on track to be operational by 2028.

Once completed, the privately financed project will become one of the world’s largest interconnectors. It is led by global investors Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power and TEPCO.
