Scottish wave energy company Mocean Energy and German subsea and marine technology company, SubCtech, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore how wave and solar energy can be coupled with batteries to deliver low-carbon solutions for a range of subsea technologies.
The two companies aim to develop customizable ocean power and monitoring solutions using wave, solar, and battery technologies.
According to Mocean Energy, the agreement outlines plans to combine their technologies and expertise to develop customizable solutions for global customers. The firms will also share system engineering, analysis, and offer engineering support as needed.
“The energy industry is now moving rapidly towards innovative technologies that can deliver low carbon solutions for subsea and for the wider blue economy,” said Ian Crossland , Commercial Director of Mocean Energy.

Mocean Energy’s Blue X wave energy converter, combined with battery storage, has already proven its reliability in the Renewables for Subsea Power (RSP) program, the company said. In February, Shell joined RSP , after TotalEnergies and PTTEP.
SubCtech brings experience in manufacturing subsea equipment, including batteries and monitoring systems for applications such as greenhouse gas monitoring and microplastic sampling.

Both companies have successfully already tested larger systems in-situ. Founded in 2010, SubCtech specializes in Li-ion batteries for underwater vehicles and offshore subsea applications. The company said it offers the first fully certified Energy Storage System (ESS) with a capacity of 1 MWh per battery skid, expandable to 6 MWh.
