For the first time ever, port terminal operator SAAM Terminals has certified all of its Chilean ports’ carbon emissions quantification and reduction in 2023, having collectively cut over 9,000 metric tons of CO2 .
As per SAAM Terminals, the operator’s Chilean ports, namely the Antofagasta, Iquique, San Vicente and Portuaria Corral, have cut down emissions by 9,408 metric tons—an amount of CO2 that could only be absorbed by more than 445,000 mature trees, according to the company.
Owing to the collective achievements of the ports—including the San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI)—each one has earned the Huella Chile emissions reduction seal, an honor given under the Huella Chile program by the Ministry of Environment that aims to encourage the private and public sectors to promote the calculation, reporting, and management of GHG emissions.
Speaking about the recent developments, Cristina Schmidt , VP Sustainability and Communications, SAAM Terminals, placed particular emphasis on the efforts of STI, which earned the Seal of Excellence—the Huella Chile program’s highest level of recognition for organization-wide carbon management.
“STI is the country’s most important terminal and also the first to receive this seal. It is an incentive to continue working in the same direction and an experience we want to leverage for all our terminals,” she noted.
As a reminder, in August 2024, SAAM Terminals revealed that San Antonio, Antofagasta, San Vicente and Corral terminals as well as the Puerto Montt logistics center had reduced their carbon footprint by 41% compared to 2021, preventing 10,522 tons of CO2 from being emitted.
The company reported that its port terminals and the logistics center had also received I-REC certificates for 100% of their electricity consumption.
