Sembcorp eyes new renewables and green hydrogen collaboration

Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singaporean state-owned energy giant Sembcorp Industries, is in discussions with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to enter into a definitive joint venture agreement for renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across India.

The partnership aims to support India’s long-term development goals, with Sembcorp claiming that it is well-positioned to spearhead decarbonization initiatives with BPCL to drive India’s energy transition.

To note, BPCL is an Indian public sector undertaking (PSU) under the ownership of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It is engaged in the business of refining of crude oil and marketing of petroleum products.

As for Sembcorp Green Hydrogen’s recent activities in India, it is worth mentioning that in August 2024, the company signed an agreement with NYK, Kyushu Electric Power Company and Sojitz Corporation for the marine transport of green ammonia to Japan. Under the agreement, the partners aim to produce “highly competitive” green ammonia in India.

According to NYK, the deal is based on the premise that approximately 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia will be produced annually through this project and transported to the Kyushu region.
