Newfoundland and Labrador-based renewable energy company World Energy GH2 has become a member of the Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2).
According to the company, GH2’s mission is to “dramatically” accelerate the production and utilization of green hydrogen across a range of sectors globally. The organization aims to decarbonize industries like steel, cement, fertilizers, shipping and aviation.
Sean Leet, Managing Director and CEO of World Energy GH2, stated: “World Energy GH2 is proud to become a member of the Green Hydrogen Organisation. The Green Hydrogen Organisation is dedicated to accelerating the decarbonisation of heavy-emitting industries by developing the green hydrogen industry. Our goals very much align, and we look forward to working together on important climate action initiatives, including how our emerging industry can collaborate to unlock the offtake conundrum.”
To note, World Energy GH2 is the developer of Project Nujio’qonik, Canada’s first commercial-scale green hydrogen/ammonia facility on the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador.
This project is expected to ultimately produce around 250,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year (1.2 million tonnes of green ammonia) with the first phase expected to produce nearly 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia for export.
At the beginning of 2024, the government of Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador released Project Nujio’qonik from further environmental assessment. The project satisfied the provincial Environmental Assessment Act requirements and was approved to proceed in accordance with a series of conditions and the issuance of requisite permits. The government of Canada is supporting the project’s development .
The project already owns the Port of Stephenville , which includes the land for the plant facility. The pre-FEED phase was completed in July 2023, followed by the submission of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in August 2023. Shortly after, World Energy GH2 was granted approval of Crown land application by the province of Newfoundland and Labrador for the project.
