Hong Kong-based containership lessor Seaspan Corporation has ordered six environmentally friendly boxships at Chinese Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
As disclosed, the shipowner booked six newbuilds, which will have a capacity of 13,600 TEUs. This type of ship was independently developed and designed by Hudong-Zhonghua.
The design features many eco-friendly technologies and adopts the latest modern concepts. The containerships will be equipped with desulfurization towers and energy-saving devices to ensure the vessels will meet the emission reduction targets.
Furthermore, the company plans to prepare the units for future fuels modification to ensure low energy consumption, high speed and green environmental protection performance.
The containerships are scheduled to be completed and delivered between 2026 and 2028.
Earlier this year, Seaspan entered into shipbuilding contracts for 27 dual-fuel containerships as part of its fleet expansion program. Thirteen contracts were for four 9,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships, four 9,000 TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel containerships and five 17,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships.
Furthermore, five contracts were placed for 17,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships and five deals were for 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships. Upon delivery, these ten newbuilds will commence long-term charters with an undisclosed client. Four more agreements were signed for LNG dual fuel 9,000 TEU boxships.
Seaspan’s parent company Atlas Corporation revealed the information in the US Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
