Swedish shipping company Erik Thun has launched the second plug-in hybrid dry cargo vessel in the new generation of Lake Vanern Max vessels, designed to minimize emissions and maximize cargo.
The launching and naming ceremony took place at Shipyard Ferus Smit in Westerbroek, Netherlands, on October 25, 2024. The vessel was named Spiken.

As disclosed, the Lake Vanern Max vessels will run on a hybrid propulsion system, using both battery power and traditional fuel to optimize energy use and reduce emissions.
The propulsion system is designed with a large diameter propeller operating within a nozzle. The company expects that this configuration will deliver increased thrust, particularly at lower speeds, resulting in reduced power demand during challenging seaways and icebreaking operations.
The vessels come with a shore connection capability for silent and emission-free operations while docked, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution.
Erik Thun introduced these new dry cargo vessels back in August 2023. The launching and naming ceremony of the first vessel took place on June 28, 2024, with the delivery occurring on October 2, 2024.
