Malaysia’s energy-related maritime services provider MISC Berhad (MISC) has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with compatriot clean energy solutions provider Gentari through Gentari Hydrogen to jointly explore the development of integrated shipping and floating solutions for clean ammonia.

Combining MISC’s shipping and floating solutions expertise with Gentari’s focus on clean hydrogen and ammonia production, the partnership aims to deliver end-to-end solutions that streamline the clean ammonia value chain while setting new benchmarks for sustainable energy transportation.

The development of new solutions is targeted for completion by 2027 at the earliest.

As informed, through a comprehensive joint study, the strategic collaboration aims to:

Marking a significant step toward supporting the global energy transition, the partnership is said to underscore both parties’ commitment to harnessing clean ammonia’s potential, championing sustainable energy pathways, and driving progress toward a low-carbon future.

“This partnership is not only about creating solutions for today but also about building the foundation for tomorrow’s low-carbon maritime ecosystem. The solutions we are developing with Gentari Hydrogen will be game-changing for the maritime industry, offering integrated approaches that enhance efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Together, we will drive innovation in the way clean ammonia is transported globally and enhancing Malaysia’s standing as a forward-looking maritime and energy hub,” Zahid Osman , President and Group Chief Executive Officer of MISC Berhad, commented.

“This collaboration marks an important step in laying the foundation for a robust clean ammonia value chain, subsequently enabling quicker decarbonisation in hard-to-abate sectors. By developing innovative ammonia shipping solutions, we are addressing critical infrastructure needs and paving the way for ammonia to become a key energy carrier in the global transition towards a sustainable future,” Michèle Azalbert , Gentari’s Chief Hydrogen Officer, said.

Earlier this year, MISC, its affiliate Petronas CCS Ventures and Japanese shipping major Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL) signed an agreement to launch a joint venture company to acquire and own liquified carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers. Under the deal, the companies plan to collaborate and explore the potential business opportunities to jointly invest in developing LCO2 carriers to transport LCO2 to CO2 storage sites in Malaysia.

In related news, MISC also revealed it was mulling over a potential merger with Bumi Armada to consolidate floating production businesses. Bumi Armada confirmed its entrance into a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with MISC on November 14, 2024, elaborating that the inked MoU would enable it to explore a prospective merger with the latter’s offshore business via an all-share transaction.
