Ørsted has awarded several contracts totaling between £75 million and £100 million to companies in the north of England to provide components for the 2.9 GW Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.
JDR Cable Systems, Severfield, and Smulders, all based in the north of England, will produce integral components and services for the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm in the UK.
Severfield, headquartered in York, will work with their contractor Hutchinson Engineering on the final assembly of key components at the Teesworks Port in Teeside.
Severfield and Smulders will supply a large proportion of secondary structures for the offshore wind farm’s foundations. This includes the suspended internal platforms (SIPs), which are internal parts of the foundations on which the wind turbines sit.
In addition, the two companies will build the boat landings where smaller vessels will arrive, allowing technicians to directly access the turbine foundation. They will also provide anode cages, which protect the steel-made foundation structure from corrosion.

This is a major achievement for the business and a key step in aligning with our strategy to expand the Nuclear & Infrastructure division into new and innovative sectors,” said Jim Martindale , Divisional Managing Director for Severfield Nuclear & Infrastructure.
Ørsted awarded JDR a contract for array cable testing and termination. The northeast of England-based company will prepare and connect the cables between the turbines and offshore converter stations and then, using their testing system, will ensure that all array cabling is fully integrated into the offshore electrical infrastructure.

These historic projects demonstrated our ability to innovate and execute at scale, from manufacturing 245 kilometers of inter-array cables for Hornsea 1 to providing advanced 66kV systems for Hornsea 2,” said Monika Cupiał-Zgrysek , CEO of JDR and CEO of TFKable.
Hellenic Cables and Prysmian Group signed a contract with the developer for the inter-array cables, while the export cables will be supplied by NKT.
Recently, Ørsted signed a contract with Seaway7 for the transport and installation of the inter-array cables at the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.
