Swedish hydrogen fuel cell provider PowerCell has bagged a follow-up order for its fuel cell system from an undisclosed Europe-based OEM manufacturer valued at approximately SEK 41.8 million (circa $3.8 million).
As disclosed, the order consists of 14 additional units of Powercell’s Marine System 225, set to be deployed on commercial cruise ships, providing auxiliary power to the vessels’ internal electrical systems. The equipment is slated for handovers by the end of 2025.
Marine System 225 is a compact fuel cell system delivering 225 kW of clean electric power with zero emissions, according to the company.
Ever since it was introduced in June 2024, the system has reportedly experienced ‘growing interest’ from industry players. As per PowerCell, the company has clinched orders for more than 75 systems, with delivery dates scheduled before the end of 2025.
At the end of September this year, the Swedish fuel cell provider signed what it described as one of the world’s largest orders of marine fuel cell systems to date with a ‘leading’ Italian marine OEM manufacturer. The order, valued at SEK 165 million (around $16 million), included a total of 56 units of the Marine System 225, with deliveries anticipated to commence at the beginning of next year.
This development came just a couple of weeks after PowerCell passed a different milestone. Specifically, in early September, the company secured the go-ahead from Norway’s classification society DNV via an approval in principle (AiP) for a new methanol-to-power solution that combines a methanol reformer with a fuel cell system.
Specifically, the new solution has a fully integrated methanol reformer from RIX Industries combined with the Marine System 225.
As explained, RIX and PowerCell’s new solution reforms methanol into hydrogen used in a fuel cell. This is believed to simplify integration and improve safety.
