TenneT selects NKT power cable systems for two projects in Germany

The Dutch/German transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT has selected NKT to provide high-voltage direct current (HVDC) onshore and offshore power cable systems for two projects that are part of TenneT’s 2 GW program.

The contracts, valued at approximately €1 billion, are set to be completed between 2026 and 2027, encompassing cable design, engineering, production, and both onshore and offshore installation.

The two projects awarded to Denmark’s NKT are LanWin7 and a part of NordOstLink in Germany.

These projects bring the total number of contracts awarded to NKT under the framework agreement to five, which is valid until 2028, with an option for extension through 2031.

For LanWin7, which has a route length of 320 kilometers, NKT will provide an onshore and offshore 525 kV XLPE HVDC power cable system.

LanWin7 is one of the offshore grid connection systems planned to connect to the multi-terminal hub in the area of Pöschendorf, Schleswig-Holstein.

The so-called NordHub will integrate multiple direct current (DC) and alternate current (AC) connections, facilitating the transport of offshore wind power from the North Sea to the onshore grid.

The NordOstLink project includes a partial route length of 65 kilometers for an onshore 525 kV HVDC power cable system. The project involves laying additional cables to enhance the capacity and flexibility of the grid, said NKT.

The commissioning of the projects is expected in 2033-2034.
