South Korea-based cable manufacturer LS Cable & System has completed the construction of Korea’s first land-Jeju voltage-type high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, establishing an undersea power link between Wando, Jeollanam-do, and Jeju Island.
Spanning approximately 90 kilometers, this project is said to be recognized as the largest subsea cable venture in the country since LS Cable’s Jeju 2-linked project in 2009.
The completion was marked with a ceremony held at the Dongjeju Conversion Center in Jeju City. The company secured the $172 million (230 billion won) contract from Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in 2020 and collaborated with its affiliate LS Marine Solution to execute the subsea cable and HVDC installation.
According to LS Cable, the HVDC technology offers lower transmission losses, mitigates electromagnetic interference, and supports bi-directional power transmission, enabling smoother integration of intermittent renewable energy sources while boosting grid efficiency.
“The completion of the three-connection in Jeju is the achievement of Team Korea, which has been achieved through cooperation between domestic companies such as LS Cable, LS Marine Solution, and construction companies, centering on KEPCO,” said Kim Hyung-won , Head of LS Cable & System’s Energy and Construction Business Division.
“It will be an important success story for K-grid technology to enter the global market.”
Meanwhile, in November 2024, Vena Energy’s subsidiary, Taean Wind Power, selected LS Cable & System as the preferred submarine cable supplier for the 504 MW Taenan offshore wind farm in South Korea.
