The on-engine NOx reduction solution for marine two-stroke engines, designed by Swiss marine power company WinGD, has received type approval and is set for first-time deployment on commercial engines.

The approval follows more than two years of service experience with a prototype version, WinGD pointed out, adding that the latest iteration features reduced material and production costs, a heating unit to enable operation with heavy fuel oil and design changes to deliver further reductions in ammonia slip.

This integrated selective catalytic reduction (iSCR) solution is also said to simplify piping requirements compared to either low- or high-pressure SCR off-engine units.

“Testing and commissioning are simplified as the engine and NOx abatement system can be tested together prior to installation. Optimised exhaust flow management and waste heat from the engine contribute to favourable conditions for treatment,” WinGD said.

As disclosed, this technology was tested at Mitsui E&S DU’s (MESDU’s) factory in Aioi, Japan, where three WinGD 5X52-S2.0 engines are being built for bulk carriers under construction at a Japanese shipyard.

The test was, reportedly, witnessed by representatives from eight classification societies: American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Bureau Veritas (BV), China Classification Society (CCS), DNV, Korean Register (KR), Lloyd’s Register (LR), ClassNK and RINA.

Peter Krähenbühl, WinGD’s Vice President of Product Centre, highlighted: “WinGD’s unique on-engine NOx abatement solution secures IMO Tier III compliance while giving operators greater flexibility in engine room configuration and ship design. This new iteration further reduces the cost impact of NOx abatement and improves the efficiency of treatment with both existing and emerging fuels.”

To note, the iSCR technology is available as an option for WinGD’s 52- and 62-bore engines, including short-stroke variants, using fuel oil, ammonia or methanol.

In other news, the marine power company recorded “key” parameters in accord with the expectations during an early testing phase of its new X-DF-A ammonia-fueled engine design.

Sebastian Hensel, WinGD’s Vice President of Research & Development, stated. “The single-cylinder X-DF-A concept is running well, with combustion efficiency, emissions and pilot consumption within our range of expectations. This milestone is a testament to our approach to innovation and the fantastic work of our development team and partners.”
