U.S.-based e-fuels provider Infinium and compatriot operator of carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities Summit Carbon Solutions have entered an arrangement for the supply of up to 670,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually at a proposed e-fuels facility in North Dakota or South Dakota.
By leveraging Summit’s pipeline network, Infinium would, reportedly, have access to a consistent supply of CO2, which is important to the production of ultra-low carbon e-fuels. These fuels, made by combining captured CO2 with renewable power-derived green hydrogen, are used in the aviation, shipping and heavy transport sectors.
Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, said: “As demand for eFuels continues to rise, it is essential to secure reliable and scalable CO2 sources. Summit’s infrastructure would supply the CO2 needed to scale production and advance eFuels as a key part of America’s energy future.”
Infinium claimed that the construction and operation of its e-fuels facility in the Midwestern U.S. would promote significant investment in state and local economies, create high-paying, skilled jobs, and support hundreds of additional positions. At the same time, it would open additional market opportunities for U.S. ethanol producers and farmers in America’s Heartland, the company added.

It is worth mentioning that, at the beginning of 2024, Infinium and Mo Industrial Park, an industrial development zone in Northern Norway, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop an advanced e-fuels production facility in Mo i Rana, Norway.
Previously, the company announced eFuels projects in South Texas and West Texas in the U.S., with offtake commitments from Amazon and American Airlines respectively, and in Dunkirk, France, in partnership with Engie.
At the beginning of 2023, the provider manufactured a ton of its proprietary, patented CO2 conversion catalyst, which according to the company is a critical component in the creation of e-fuels.
