Van Oord wins seabed protection work on Polish offshore wind farms

The Dutch company Van Oord has signed a contract with Equinor and Polenergia to perform seabed protection work at the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms in Poland. The contract covers the supply, transport, and installation of stone ripraps on the seabed to protect the cables and foundations.

The Dutch company Van Oord has signed a contract with Equinor and Polenergia to perform seabed protection work at the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms in Poland.

The contract covers the supply, transport, and installation of stone ripraps on the seabed to protect the cables and foundations.

“The implementation of the agreement will allow us to secure the foundations of wind turbines, offshore transformer stations and the internal cable routes and those connecting the Bałtyk 2 and 3 wind farms with the Polish power grid on the offshore section. This will protect the underwater infrastructure against erosion processes and is intended to prevent damage to the cables,” said Michał Jerzy Kołodziejczyk , President of the Management Board of Equinor Polska.

Equinor and Polenergia are developing three offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea with a total capacity of up to 3 GW.

The first phase of the development will involve the construction of Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3, comprising 100 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD wind turbines .

The foundations will be supplied by the Dutch company Sif under a contract signed with the developers in February 2024. The export cables will be delivered by Greece’s Hellenic Cables.

The Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms received all the required construction permits in August 2024. The two projects will have a total capacity of 1,440 MW and be able to supply over two million households with renewable energy, according to the developers.
