Norwegian shipping company Rem Offshore has held the steel cutting ceremony for its second energy subsea construction vessel (ESCV) being constructed in Vietnam.

Two and a half months after entering the contract with compatriot Myklebust Verft, Rem Offshore announced it had celebrated the steel cutting ceremony for Bn83/REM Ocean at Song Cam in Vietnam on February 11.

The first vessel , designated as Bn82 and named REM Pioneer, is already sitting heavily on the slipway. Initial steel cutting for this vessel took place on July 3, 2024, with the keel laying ceremony on October 24, 2024 . Delivery is scheduled for 2026.

According to the company, the next important milestones – launching the first hull of REM Pioneer and keel laying of REM Ocean – are scheduled for early summer 2025.

REM Ocean will have dual-fuel engines capable of running on bio-methanol and biodiesel, along with a battery energy storage system and regenerative energy systems. Both vessels are designed by Skipsteknisk.

Once commissioned in 2027, REM Ocean will begin operating on a long-term contract with DeepOcean , providing subsea inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) services for Equinor.

The 111.7-meter-long vessel, developed as a collaboration between DeepOcean, Rem Offshore, Skipsteknisk and other key suppliers, will be equipped with an autonomous inspection drone (AID) , set to accelerate the digitalization of subsea asset inspection.

It will feature Brunvoll’s thruster package , a 250-ton electrical crane, two electric work-class remotely operated vehicles (WROVs) in hangars, a 1,000-square meter outside deck area, and an inside hangar area of 350 square meters, in addition to accommodation for 120 people.
