Norwegian renewable energy firm Alotta, in collaboration with compatriot fish farming company Emilsen Fisk, is installing a floating solar power plant at the latter’s facility in Båfjordstranda, making it the “world’s northernmost floating solar power plant.”
According to Alotta, the project, backed by Norwegian state enterprise Enova, aims to reduce reliance on diesel generators in the aquaculture sector.
Currently, about 40% of Norwegian fish farms are said to operate on diesel, driving up emissions and fuel costs. The floating solar system, developed by Alotta, is designed to cut fossil fuel dependency.
Emilsen Fisk is said to integrate the Alotta Solar Hybrid 120, engineered for maritime environments, to incorporate renewables into its energy mix.
The initiative has received funding from Enova, which is covering 45% of the project costs through the Climate and Energy Fund.

For Emilsen Fisk, sustainability is said to be a key focus. Roy Emilsen , CEO of Emilsen Fisk, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating that the Alotta Solar Hybrid 120 offers an opportunity to utilize clean energy at Båfjordstranda. Emilsen expects the system to be operational by March.

The floating solar system is scheduled for installation in March/April 2025. Built to withstand offshore conditions, the Alotta Solar Hybrid 120 combines solar technology with durable engineering for aquaculture operations.
