IMODCO Terminals, a subsidiary of the Netherlands-headquartered SBM Offshore, has secured a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract with Carbon Collectors for the development of an offshore CO2 transport and injection solution in the Southern North Sea.

The nine‑month FEED will define the design of a tower offloading unit (TOU), designed for the harsh North Sea conditions, enabling CO2 carriers to moor offshore and transfer liquefied CO2 for injection into permanent geological storage.

The engineering phase integrates recent development work, including advanced marine simulations and operational assessments tailored to offshore CO2 handling.

The project is set to progress into the full EPC phase by late 2026, subject to a final investment decision (FID).

“This project represents an important evolution of our jettyless offshore loading technology toward new energy applications,” said Perry Adams , Product Line Director at IMODCO Terminals. “By applying our proven expertise to CO2 transfer, we are helping to build the infrastructure needed for large‑scale decarbonization. It also aligns with SBM’s strategic priorities of decarbonization and diversification, besides highlighting our role in the energy transition space.”

The TOU will have three main functions, including the provision of a North Sea weathervaning mooring solution for Carbon Collectors’ vessels, transferring CO2 from the vessels to the CO2 store, and providing a stable platform for maintenance activities.

“Imodco has been an important strategic partner for us throughout the development of our direct offshore injection system. We are excited to continue this partnership into the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, getting us ready to store our first CO2 in the Southern North Sea by 2029,” said Ludo van Hijfte , CEO of Carbon Collectors.
