Belgian shipping company Exmar has landed an assignment for a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit destined for deployment in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation, on Canada’s West Coast.

Exmar has been hired by Cedar LNG Partners to provide its marine and operational expertise for the FLNG Megúgu , described as the world’s first Indigenous majority-owned LNG facility in Kitimat, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada, within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation.

Cedar LNG , majority-owned by Haisla Nation , in partnership with Pembina Pipeline Corporation , is envisioned to be powered by renewable electricity, making it one of the lowest carbon intensity LNG facilities in the world. The FLNG is currently under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

Carl-Antoine Saverys , Exmar’s CEO, commented: “Exmar is proud to be selected as strategic partner and embark on this unique, first of its kind FLNG project. Our unique track record for safe and reliable operations has been thoroughly valued by Cedar. We are confident this partnership will create a strong base for future FLNG operations.”

Exmar’s scope of work will include the development of dedicated operational procedures for the FLNG Megúgu. The firm’s teams will be involved during the different phases of the project, starting immediately during construction and pre-operations, in close partnership with the Cedar team.

Pembina recently secured a 12-year agreement with Ovintiv , described as one of Canada’s largest natural gas producers, following a 20-year deal with Petronas for 1 mtpa of its liquefaction capacity at the Cedar LNG facility.

The FLNG will be powered by clean hydroelectricity from B.C.’s grid and will produce ultra low-carbon LNG that has the potential to displace the use of higher-emitting forms of energy in Asia.
