Norway’s Ocean Sun has secured NOK 8 million (around €710,000) in public funding for a project that aims to strengthen the long-term performance and reliability of its floating solar technology.

The public funding was awarded for the Enhanced Environmental Resilience for OS FPV System (EROS) research project, an Innovation Project for the Industrial Sector (IPN), running from 2026 to 2029.

According to Ocean Sun , EROS will provide the company with improved methods for assessing new photovoltaic (PV) module types, modelling environmental stressors, and implementing mitigation measures in system design and operations. The results are expected to support future product development and strengthen the competitiveness of Ocean Sun’s technology in more exposed locations.

Work will focus on environmental stressors such as waves, moisture, high salinity and soiling and how it impacts the PV modules, and includes testing and optimization of Ocean Sun’s automated cleaning system.

The project is carried out in collaboration with the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), which will contribute research within mechanical modelling, moisture-related degradation, and soiling analysis.
