Gas Malaysia, a Malaysian natural gas provider, is all set to proceed with the development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification terminal project in Yan, Kedah.
Gas Malaysia has received a letter to proceed (LTP) with the LNG regasification terminal project in Kedah from the Energy Commission of Malaysia (EC), which enables the project to progress to the next phase of implementation, including detailed engineering, financing progression, site preparation, and other related preparatory works.
Located in Yan, Kedah, to the west of Pulau Bunting, RGT Yan is envisaged as an offshore floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a planned regasification capacity of up to 6 metric tons per annum (mtpa).
The project is currently estimated to involve a development cost of approximately RM2 billion (about $507.8 million) to RM3 billion (around $761.6 million). The Malaysian firm claims that the manner of funding for this project will be determined at a later stage.
The LTP is subject to certain conditions imposed by the EC, which the company is required to fulfil within the stipulated timeline to progress the development of the project.
Malaysia has been working on augmenting its oil and gas arsenal, as demonstrated by the launch of the Malaysia Bid Round 2026 (MBR 2026). This move was made to fortify the country’s position as an energy investment destination.
