Viva Energy’s proposed gas terminal in Geelong received formal backing under the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act at the start of April 2025.
The company welcomed the Environment Minister’s EPBC approval, which recognizes that the proposed LNG terminal can proceed, subject to conditions, with acceptable environmental effects.
The approval follows the Victorian government’s positive assessment of an environment effects statement for this energy infrastructure project in May 2026. The firm intends to build this gas terminal at Geelong Refinery Pier.
Viva describes the LNG terminals as “Victoria’s best and most advanced project, capable of delivering a reliable supply to replace Victoria’s rapidly declining natural gas and provide energy security for south-east Australia.”

According to the Australian firm, comprehensive studies by independent experts have shown that the gas terminal’s operations will not adversely impact the Corio Bay marine environment or the Ramsar wetlands.
Last year, Viva hired Poten & Partners to obtain expressions of interest from the global maritime industry to supply an existing FSRU or retrofit an LNG carrier into an FSRU for the terminal.
