Brazilian state-owned energy giant Petrobras has unveiled a new hydrocarbon discovery in the deep waters of the pre-salt Campos Basin offshore Brazil.

Petrobras has found hydrocarbons in an exploratory well drilled in Sector SC-AP4 of the Campos Basin, block C-M-477. The well 1-BRSA-1404DC-RJS is located 201 kilometers off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, at a water depth of 2,984 meters.

The company explained that the hydrocarbon-bearing interval was identified through electric logs, gas shows, and fluid sampling. The samples will subsequently be sent for laboratory analysis, enabling characterization of reservoir conditions and the fluids found, allowing the continuation of the evaluation of the area’s potential.

Petrobras is the operator of block C-M-477 (70% working interest), in partnership with BP (30% working interest). The block was awarded by the Brazilian National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) in the 16th Bidding Round, under a concession regime.

The Brazilian giant’s operations in block C-M-477 are said to align with its strategy to replenish oil and gas reserves through activities in frontier exploratory areas, in partnership with other companies, ensuring the supply of national energy demand during the energy transition.

Petrobras is keen on bolstering its hydrocarbon arsenal, as demonstrated by multiple recent rig deals with Valaris , Seadrill , Transocean , Ventura Offshore , and Constellation .
