U.S.-headquartered energy technology giant Baker Hughes has secured a contract extension with Brazil’s state-owned energy giant Petrobras for the expansion of integrated well construction operations across the South American country’s pre-salt offshore oil and gas fields.

Building on a well construction services award announced in early 2024, the contract extension with Petrobras will enable Baker Hughes to provide integrated solutions for well construction across Brazil’s Santos Basin, widening the company’s comprehensive well construction operations in several of the basin’s oilfields.

The U.S. player’s portfolio, including the AutoTrak rotary steerable system, logging-while-drilling tools, and Dynamus extended-life drill bits, will be deployed across the construction portfolio of deepwater wells.

This is expected to enable efficient access to subsurface reservoirs and support the ongoing development of Brazil’s pre-salt oil and gas resources. The new extension further enlarges the scope and impact of Baker Hughes’ integrated drilling solutions in the region.

The American giant’s integrated approach is perceived to unlock incremental value for complex operations, enhancing efficiency and innovation in offshore developments. The project will be executed through the firm’s Integration & Solutions team alongside Petrobras’ wells team.

The joint expertise is anticipated to enable greater operational efficiency in Petrobras’ offshore well construction operations. Aside from specialized drilling solutions, the team will leverage technologies and expertise across wireline, cementing, wellbore clean-up, fishing, remedial tools, fluids, services, and geosciences.

Amerino Gatti , Baker Hughes Executive Vice President of Oilfield Services & Equipment, commented: “The success of this critical project illustrates the strength and capabilities of Baker Hughes’ comprehensive portfolio, offering an integrated, solutions-focused approach.

“By combining innovative technology with a holistic view of project management, we are setting new standards for efficiency and safety in well construction.”

This contract extension comes months after Baker Hughes obtained a long-term deal with Petrobras to support critical turbomachinery equipment for offshore and refinery operations.
