Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Chiyoda – JGC Joint Venture to carry out power system studies to support the development of gas fields in Papua New Guinea throughout the engineering, procurement and construction phase.
The project, known as PNG LNG, is an integrated development which includes gas production and processing facilities in Papua New Guinea.
The PNG LNG project will develop gas fields in the Southern and Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea and transfer the gas via a pipeline to a two-train liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility which will be constructed near the capital Port Moresby.
The total combined capacity of the facility will be 6.3 million tonnes of LNG per year. There will be over 700 kilometers (450 miles) of pipelines connecting the facilities.
Mott MacDonald will perform a comprehensive series of power system studies. These will include advising on potential operational constraints as well as obsolescence of equipment, in addition to providing settings for the protection relays that will be installed on the plant once it is built.
Mott MacDonald previously provided support to Chiyoda during the initial front-end engineering and design (FEED) phase of the project in 2009.

The project will progress in a series of development phases with the first LNG deliveries scheduled to begin in 2014. The capital value of the project is estimated to be around US$15 billion.
