From the summer of 2011, most transport from the Skangass LNG plant (image) in the municipality of Sola in Norway will be done by ship. Nordic LNG AS has entered into an agreement with the Dutch shipping company Anthony Veder for the transport of LNG by ship.

“We now have secured both a short-term and a long-term shipping solution – a vital part of the LNG value chain” says Peter Blomberg, Managing Director at Nordic LNG . For the first two years, Anthony Veder will use the LNG carrier the Coral Methane, to transport LNG out of Risavika.

The Coral Methane is a modern vessel which is able to run on the low emission LNG fuel and will be used to transport LNG until a new ship is ready. Anthony Veder has been commissioned by Nordic LNG to build a new LNG carrier. The vessel will be built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in northern Germany. The new ship will be built specially for Nordic LNG’s small-scale LNG concept and is scheduled for delivery by the end of 2012. The vessel, which will have a length overall of abt. 156 metres and a breadth of 22,7 metres, will use low emission LNG fuel and will be classed within the highest environmental norms.

Nordic LNG will have a great degree of flexibility in its transport system, and is able to supply both small and large customers in Europe. So far, agreements have been secured for well over half the annual production at the Skangass LNG plant, and work is underway with a number of new customers. On delivery of the full production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of LNG, the total environmental account will be very good.

Meyer Werft and the Anthony Veder Group have been working together building ships since the 1970s, and Meyer Werft has built a total of 55 LPG and LEG ships. Meyer Werft is known for the high quality of its ships. Anthony Veder has long experience of this type of transport in Europe, and the aim of both the shipping company and the shipyard is to further develop the building of ships for the small-scale LNG market. Once construction of the new ship is complete, it will be chartered to Nordic LNG on a long-term contract.
