JC Carter, the leading designer and manufacturer of cryogenic submerged motor pumps (SMP), announced the delivery of eight third generation, high-efficiency liquid natural gas (LNG) pumps from its workshops in Costa Mesa, Calif. to the Sines, Portugal LNG terminal expansion.

The Sines LNG terminal is owned and operated by REN Atlantico, which is building a third storage tank that is expected to increase the plant’s nominal send-out capacity from approximately 600,000 Nm3/h, to 900,000 Nm3/h of natural gas (NG) (Nm3/h = nominal cubic meters an hour) per year.

The Sines LNG terminal, which entered the first phase of its commercial operation in January 2004, consists of a jetty and two storage tanks, each with 120,000 cubic meters storage capacity and an average discharge time of 150 hours with four open-rack vaporizers for regasification. The expansion project includes the construction of a third storage tank plus the addition of more vaporizers.

The Sines LNG terminal expansion was constructed by TRACTEBEL Engineering International of Belgium. The expansion has been contracted by TGE Gas Engineering, Bonn, Germany, and includes five low-pressure and three high-pressure JC Carter pumps.

The three high pressure pumps have the highest efficiency in the industry at 88 percent. Together with the five low pressure pumps supplied, they will help increase the plant’s capacity by 50 percent with the third tank. TRACTEBEL Engineering of Brussels is the owner’s engineer.

To promote a high quality and safety level, the EPC applied new health, safety, and environment standards and used new developments to the design, construction, and operation phases of the project.

“JC Carter’s third generation LNG technology leads to the highest efficiency in the industry and will assist REN Atlantico with achieving their expansion goals in the coming years,” said JC Carter Project Manager Reza Abrahimzadeh. “The total expansion project will be completed in 2012.”
