A&P Group’s Falmouth yard has invested in and upgraded its engineering workshop as part of its ongoing improvement programme. The company’s machine workshop, that already holds 18 lathes and can accommodate 2.5m radius components up to 12m in length, has had new lathes and digital read outs fitted to increase quality and efficiency.
Already a well established ship repair, conversion and fabrication business, A&P want to make full use of their 3500m2 covered mechanical work and machine shop and are keen to showcase the facilities across a variety of sectors including oil and gas and the renewable energy sectors.
Servicing the workshop are overhead cranes allowing all sizes of machinery to be stripped and the components machined to extend their service life. Paul Hebson Operations Director , A&P (Falmouth) said: “This coupled with the fully equipped cleaning facility allows old components to be returned overhauled, cleaned and looking like new.
“The workshop is fully equipped to facilitate complex large scale machining and has a reputation for high quality and on time delivery. We have found this to be a major draw for companies looking to have complex machining conducted. We are able to take on any engineering project, across all sectors, as the equipment we have to hand can be used for all engineering projects not only shipping.”
Overseen by highly skilled in house machinists, vertical and horizontal boring machines accommodate components as heavy as 12.5 ton in weight, and enable components that cannot be rotated to be machined.
A recent project in the workshop included refurbishing vessel propeller hubs. The 8-ton propeller hub required each of the four blade apertures re-machining; A&P were able to carry out the complex work on the horizontal boring machine housed in the workshop both quickly and efficiently whilst saving the customer, Italian based company Grimaldi, both time and money.
Hebson continues, “There are only a handful of facilities in the UK that can carry out a machining operation of this nature and we would welcome anyone who wants to visit the facility and take a look at what we can do on site.
