Australia Pacific LNG has today announced the execution of an agreement to provide permanent water and wastewater services to Curtis Island to support its LNG facility on Curtis Island, Gladstone.
Australia Pacific LNG is the foundation customer of the Common Use Infrastructure Agreement (CUIA) which has been developed in partnership with the Gladstone Area Water Board (GAWB) and Gladstone Regional Council (GRC).
Services that will be developed under the CUIA include a water pipeline, owned and operated by GAWB, to provide fresh water to the island; and another pipeline, owned and operated by GRC, which will transport and process wastewater from the LNG facility.
Australia Pacific LNG Project Director, Page Maxson said “ This agreement is the result of successful collaboration between Australia Pacific LNG, government and council for a long-term utilities supply and is an environmentally-responsible solution to providing water services to the LNG industry .”
“ It will significantly reduce harbour traffic associated with the project, and will provide a safe and environmentally responsible method of processing and transporting brine and waste water from the LNG facility ,” Mr Maxson said.
The signing of the CUIA will now initiate the awarding of construction contracts by GAWB with construction expected to commence in September 2011. The services are expected to be completed in mid-2012.
The CUIA evolved from a recommendation made by the Coordinator General on the approval of Australia Pacific LNG’s Environmental Impact Statement. To promote collaboration, the CUIA has been drafted to allow other LNG proponents and industrial users the opportunity to reserve pipeline capacity. The services will run along the eastern border of the LNG precinct on Curtis Island, giving all proponents equal opportunity to use the utilities.
