Subsea specialists Marin Group and Ecosse Subsea Systems have formed an alliance to offer a one-stop excavation and trenching service to the oil, gas and renewables industries worldwide.
The association brings together Marin Group’s pioneering Evo System suite of mass-flow excavation, claycutting and jet sled technology and Ecosse Subsea Systems’ highly versatile SCAR plough for pre-cut, simultaneous and post lay trenching.
Marin Group CEO George (Boris) Stroud said: “Together we can provide a unique set of complementary techniques that gives clients the answer to a broad range of subsea trenching and excavation challenges, from shore approach work to complex full ocean depth operations.
“By working as an alliance, we are able to mobilise from one vessel which is a highly convenient option for clients as it offers them very significant savings on both time and money.”
Ecosse Subsea Systems managing director Mike Wilson said: “ This agreement brings together two expert companies for trenching and subsea lifting activities. There is a very good fit — what Marin doesn’t do, we specialise in and vice-versa, and where we overlap we are even more powerful.
”The relationship also allows us to support our clients through Marin’s overseas bases.”
The Marin Group of companies is based in Ellon, near Aberdeen, with further operations across Asia and in the US, and is led by Mr Stroud and long-time business partner Nick Sills. Between them they are responsible for designing and building 98% of the MFE and claycutting technology in use today.

Aberdeen-based Ecosse Subsea Systems is headed by Mike Wilson who has 26 years of experience in trenching and subsea construction projects around the world. The company provides a range of services including subsea trenching, lifting, insulation, offshore engineering consultancy, technology, and the supply of specialist personnel to the oil, gas and renewables markets.
The innovative SCAR plough is the only tool of its kind in the world, designed to be launched and operated primarily from a conventional anchor-handling vessel without the need for lifting apparatus but also able to be mobilised from, for example, dive support vessels. There is already considerable interest in SCAR’s ultra-deep capability (2m-10m trench depths) in ice-affected Arctic regions and the Caspian.
