Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) has received an Environmental Protection Award at the prestigious International Bulk Journal Awards 2011, organized last week in Antwerp, Belgium.
Upon acknowledging the dedication to protecting the environment in which it operates, ADPC was praised for its investment in the building of a USD 240 million Environmental Breakwater that ENCOMPASSES its flagship Khalifa Port in an effort to preserve the Ras Ghanada coral reef, the greatest and most versatile coral community in the Arabian Gulf.
Upon receiving the award at the event, Capt. Al Shamisi said:
“ ADPC is committed to ensuring sustainable development in all our projects and, as a responsible member of the wider community, the company takes its responsibility towards the impact its projects have on the environment very seriously. We are constantly striving for better practices and solutions so it is an honour to have the dedication, perseverance and hard work of all ADPC members recognised and rewarded by our peers in the business community, and we look forward to more awards in the years to come”.
The Environmental Breakwater at Khalifa Port rises four meters above the water surface, cutting down sea-swell, pollution and any unwanted temperature fluctuation from any port use. The foundation of core materials covered with a strong synthetic geotextile heavy canvas, coated in big chunks of rock originating from Ras Al Khaimah that have been cleaned to prevent contamination of marine existence, and finally topped out with coffin-shaped wave breakers is what the breakwater is constructed with.
