Melbourne based BMT Design & Technology, a subsidiary of the BMT Group, the international maritime design, engineering and risk management consultancy, has announced that it has been awarded a contract that will help preserve the historic warship HMVS Cerberus.

BMT Design & Technology is investigating several design options that will support the iconic gun turrets on the wreck of the vessel.

HVMS Cerberus which became the longest serving and most powerful colonial warship in Australian waters prior to the formation of the Royal Australian Navy in 1911 currently rests in three metres of water in Half Moon Bay, south east of Melbourne. It was the first ever battleship to incorporate a combination of central superstructure with fore and aft gun turrets, major elements of the ship which BMT is now looking to address.

Through preliminary analyses BMT will be able to identify various solutions to help support the ageing gun turrets. Data will be gathered using 3D laser scanning to ensure an accurate representation of the ship’s current condition can be realised.

Samantha Tait, Commercial & Operations Manager at BMT Design & Technology explains: “HMVS Cerberus holds worldwide significance in the development of naval architecture and the conduct of naval warfare and it’s vital that we do what we can to ensure a safe resting place for this iconic vessel. The 3D model which we generate from laser scanning will be used alongside Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to determine the best design moving forward.”
