North Carolina’s congressional delegation members have addressed President Obama seeking the money for dredging the Wilmington Harbor.
The funding would also include renourishment of Brunswick County beaches and Bald Head Island.
According to the Sand Management Plan outlined by the Army Corps of Engineers, it is necessary to distribute sand to the beach communities in the Cape Fear region since extensive erosion has accumulated sand onto the bottom of the Wilmington Harbor.
The estimated costs for the Sand Management Plan range from $12 million to $15 million.
At the same time, Bald Head Island officials are considering an appeal the village had filed last year against the Army Corps of Engineers.
The village believes the shoreline recession was provoked by the corps’ activities to deepen and widen the Wilmington Harbor Channel.
