The 350-foot-long tourist landmark on Lake Kalamazoo, S.S. Keewatin steamship will be set free once 50,000 cubic yards of the muck and mud are removed this week.

The Keewatin is surrounded by approximately 12 feet of silt and dredging the muck is the first step to getting the ship ready to cover a 600-mile trip next June to its former home in Port McNicoll, Ontario.

After removing the silt, dredging of a channel in Lake Kalamazoo will take place next spring to move the Keewatin to the Saugatuck channel and Lake Michigan.

Skyline Development is investing over $1 million to conduct the dredging and make the 15-foot deep channel to facilitate the towing.
