A joint venture between Thiess and Belgian company BESIX SA (BEST JV) has won a $260 million contract to develop the breakwater and materials offloading facility (MOF) of the Chevron-operated Wheatstone Project, a LNG and domestic gas project in Western Australia.

Thiess’ local capabilities, paired with BESIX’s international marine expertise, allow the joint venture to focus on Australia’s growing demand for first-class port infrastructure.

The JV is responsible for the design and construction of the project’s breakwater and MOF near Onslow in the State’s north-west. The project will create more than 300 jobs; with the majority of this new work based in Onslow, as well as this 80% of the work under this contract will take place in Australia.

Thiess Managing Director Bruce Munro said the Wheatstone Project enables the BEST JV to bring this unique combination of capabilities to the benefit of Chevron.

“ This partnership creates a new specialist marine capability to support the booming LNG sector and continues our involvement in the industry, and the productive and ongoing relationship with Chevron Australia ,” he said.

“ Thiess is at the forefront of providing the critical infrastructure needed for this rapidly growing industry .”

The contract is Thiess’ second win on the Wheatstone Project, having previously secured a microtunnelling contract direct with Chevron. For the breakwater/MOF Thiess is contracted to Bechtel which is delivering the work packages for Chevron.

Thiess is currently completing two contracts for Chevron on the Gorgon LNG Project at Barrow Island including the design and construction of the accommodation village, and construction of the site preparation and temporary facilities.

Work is due to start on site later this year.
